Trainer Ciaron Maher has revealed that Bon Aurum will chase a second consecutive crown at the highest level when he is confirmed in the 2016 Toorak Handicap field on Wednesday.
Bon Aurum failed to come up during three autumn starts this year, but has returned to racing in career best form this time; highlighted by a maiden Group 1 triumph in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield a fortnight ago.
Maher has been thrilled with the condition of the Bon Hoffa entire since his last start triumph and told AAP he has no doubt that the horse well perform to a high standard over a mile in the 2016 Toorak Handicap, despite having never been placed at the distance.
“He’s in great order,” Maher said.
“He goes out to the mile on his home track. There’s a lot to like about it.
“He galloped on the course proper at Caulfield this morning and worked well. Similar to going into the last race.
“Hopefully he can draw a similar gate to last time and sit in the same sort of spot. He seems to like that.
“He’s a more relaxed horse now, travels better and therefore he’s finishing off his races better.
“He was a bit aggressive as a three-year-old but he’s a more rounded horse now and probably in his best form.”
Bon Aurum has posted a commendable five race wins and three minors through a total of thirteen career starts, since making his competitive debut in the winter of 2015.
Experiencing something of a rise to prominence through spring last year, Bon Aurum won each of the Listed Pin & Win Stakes (1400m) and Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m), but was returned to the paddock after failing to fire and ninth in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).
Resuming this time for third in the talent-rich Moniek Sambor Tile Import BM78 (1200m), Bon Aurum returned to winning form in the Listed The Sofitel (1400m) on September 10th, in what was his only other start prior to the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.
The 2016 Toorak Handicap field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday (October 5th).
