Troy Corstens has revealed a race like the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) could figure as the major spring target for Mr Individual, should the horse continue to build off an impressive last-start victory.
Mr Individual failed to return to winning form through a recent trip north to Queensland, but did his chances of success in the Jockeys Trust Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield no harm whatsoever when jumping well and taking an ideal position in transit within the field of nine.
Offered a clear racing line upon arriving at the final straight, the Starspangledbanner colt immediately responded when asked for an extra effort by jockey Ben Thompson; charging clear before finding the line a length and a half ahead of closest rival Downhearted.
Corstens told Racing Victoria he is unsure what the Spring Carnival will have in store for Mr Individual, but confirmed races like the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) and 2016 Toorak Handicap could very well come into consideration.
“He settled nicely, bounced good and raced very generously and I think that helped him today,” Corstens said.
“I think as long as he settles nice and everything goes good for him, he’s a pretty good horse.
“We don’t know what we’re going to do just yet.
“When they relax, it doesn’t pop up the soft palate and then the horse is all right, it’s only when they get a bit excited – the soft palate stops their breathing and their out of business.
“We’re hoping he can (reach his potential). If he keeps racing the way he did today – I’d say definitely.”
Mr Individual immediately stamped himself as a colt to follow upon debuting to racing for success in a Bendigo minor over 1100m in June last year, but failed to make anything of an impression when stepping up to black type company for the first time in the Group 3 McNeil Stakes (1200m).
Returning to winning form in the Polytrack BM64 (1200m), Mr Individual placed sixth in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) and ended his debut campaign with a win in the Movenpick Racedayicecream BM78 (1600m).
Clearly requiring a run when returning this year for eleventh in the Group 2 Euclase Stakes (1200m), the colt out of She’s Alluring placed fourth in the talent-rich Le Pine Funerals Handicap (1400m) but was again unable to figure when arriving in Brisbane for tenth in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m).
Trialling well, Mr Individual ran a credible fourth in the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) in his only other start prior to his most recent triumph.
