Teronado a Possible 2015 Toorak Handicap Contender

July 20th, 2015

Group 1 performer Teronado has not been seen at the races for close to a year, but owner Steve Foster has revealed the rising five-year-old is nearing a return to competition ahead of a 2015 Spring Carnival campaign that could be geared towards a race like the Toorak Handicap (1600m).

Posting four wins and a further five minors through only 16 competitive starts so far, Teronado returned to racing last spring for a credible second in the Farewell Eagle Farm Track Plate (1200m); returning to the winner’s circle in the Madison Cleaning & Painting C6 (1640m) before suffering a nasty injury in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) on September 20th.

Foster told AAP that trainer Bruce Hill has been pleased with the continually developing condition of the Testa Rossa gelding this time and is confident he will lay a great account for himself through the 2015 Spring Carnival.

“Bruce is a great horseman and has really taken his time with Teronado,” Foster said.

“If he comes up we are looking at again going to Melbourne in the spring.

“But we are not getting ahead of ourselves.”

Teronado stamped his claims as one to watch from his first competitive campaign early in 2013; winning two of three starts and finishing second to Architect in the Hot 91.1 Handicap (1300m).

Returning in similarly impressive condition in spring, Teronado won the Jahm Handicap (1300m) in August before his first taste of Sydney black type racing delivered a credible fifth in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m).

Undoubtedly finding career-best form to date through the 2014 autumn, Teronado ran third in a Rosehill minor over 1200m first-up before placing fifth in each of the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m).

Continuing to impress in running on for fourth in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 15th, the gelding out of Nassi Doll produced a standout effort to finish third to Criterion in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) but failed to get the distance when fourteenth in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (2400m).
