Commanding Jewel Confirmed for 2014 Toorak Handicap

September 30th, 2014

Returning to the track after nearly 12 months on the sidelines with injury this spring, co-trainer Troy Corstens has revealed Corey Brown will take the ride on classy mare Commanding Jewel in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on October 11th.

Quickly building to the task over her first two starts this time in, Commanding Jewel was expected to comfortably take out the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley last Friday night but was unable to find top gear in the final straight, finishing a disappointing third.

Confirming all options, including the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) remain in consideration for the Commands mare this time in, Corstens told TVN he remains confident of a return to Group 1 winning-form through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival for Commanding Jewel and will make a decision pending results in the Toorak.

“We’ll see how she runs in the Toorak and make a decision after that,” Corstens said.

“It’s onwards and upwards. We’ll just ride her quietly in the Toorak.

“I don’t think it suited being outside the leader on Friday.

“We went back through everything and looked at all her runs. If you look at her run in the Edward Manifold it was exactly the same as last Friday and she came out in Thousand Guineas and ridden cold she won impressively.

“That’s what we’ll be doing in the Toorak.”

Claiming a total of five wins and four minor places from just ten competitive starts so far, Commanding Jewel has been a standout performer form her maiden racing preparation through the spring of 2012; winning each of her first two starts before running second in the Group 3 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m), third in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) and breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m).

Appearing in line for another strong preparation through the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, a string of unfortunate injuries ended her hopes for further glory for close to a year, but returned this time for third in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) an impressive win in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) prior to the Stocks Stakes.
