Outlined for a tilt at the featured Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) after beginning his preparation in his native New Zealand, trainer Trent Busuttin has revealed talented stayer Cauthen will instead travel to Australia this week and begin his October preparations earlier in the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.
A standout performer over just five competitive starts so far, Busuttin outlined places for a return to Australia for the Darci Brahma entire for major events through the 2014 Autumn Racing Carnival; however the four-year-old was forced into the spelling paddock after suffering a stress fracture.
Transferring to the care of Busuttin from trainer Andrew Campbell’s stables last month, Cauthen is yet to be confirmed for a particular racing path upon arriving in Australia, however is still likely to target the Cox Plate following early Group 1 tilts that may include the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m).
“He (Cauthen) is on a plane on Wednesday and joins the stable then,” Busuttin told AAP
“He will be at the track on Thursday with a saddle on his back and we’ll go from there.
“We’ll find a Rating 90 race or something like that to kick him off in and if he can do well there, a race like the Rupert Clarke Stakes or the Toorak Handicap would probably be ideal targets for him.
“If he happened to win those races there’s the Cox Plate there, but obviously that’s the cream of the crop. So we’ll see.”
Debuting with an exceptional nine length victory in the Goldpine 2.y.o Maiden (1200m) on July 3rd last year, Cauthen crossed the ditch to finish a close second in the Sweeney Can Do Agents CG (1000m) on August 3rd before winning the Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) ahead of a talented field which included both Shamus Award and Long John most notably three weeks later.
