Moody Hoping for 2014 Toorak Berth for Stamina

July 18th, 2014

Unable to take to the track during the 2014 Autumn Carnival, trainer Peter Moody has confirmed rising four-year-old Stamina will return from injury at Flemington this weekend ahead of a hopeful Spring Racing Carnival geared towards the featured Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) on October 11th.

Claiming two race victories and two unlucky seconds from four starts in the early 2014 spring, Stamina has not been seen on course since suffering a suspensory tendon issue while training for a tilt at Group-level events.

Allocated an ideal barrier for his racing return this weekend, Moody told Racing Victoria that while not expecting a perfect performance first-up, he is confident Stamina will return to his racing best this time in.

“I’m hoping he might develop into a Toorak Handicap type of horse,” Moody said.

“He’s probably a bit big and he’ll probably find tomorrow’s race a bit short but it’s just a good race to kick him off and get the juices flowing.

“I’ve always had a good opinion of this horse and still do.”

Securing an impressive total of two wins and three minor places from just seven competitive starts so far, Stamina produced a keen turn of foot to finish fifth amongst classy competition in the Christmas Season Plate (1000m) on debut in December 2012, returning to racing in 2013 for third in the Bay Hotel At Bonnells Bay Maiden (1200m) and an unlucky fifth when blocked for a run in the William Roberts Lawyers Maiden (1200m).

Breaking through for a maiden race victory in the Corporate Members Raceday Maiden (1300m) first-up last spring, the Sebring colt finished second to Group 2 victor Arabian Gold in two Sydney events over a mile before returning to the winner’s circle with arguably his best performance to date; beating home a talented field that included subsequent Group 3 champions Bull Point and Savvy Nature in the Rosehill Gardens 3.y.o BM75 (1400m).
