The Group 1 Toorak Handicap is due to run at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday October 12, 2013.
The race is worth $400,000 in prize money and is run over a distance of 1,600 metres.
The 2013 Toorak Handicap will take place under open handicap conditions and is open to horses of all ages.
Scheduled to run as part of Caulfield Guineas Day, the race shares its program with the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas, Group 1 Caulfield Stakes, Group 2 Schillaci Stakes, Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes, Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes, Group 3 Northwood Plume Stakes and Listed Weekend Hussler Stakes.
Trainer James McNamara has high hopes of his horse Hornets’ Nest can be competitive in the 2013 Toorak Handicap on his way to the $3 million Cox Plate two weeks later.
“We aim to start off his campaign at Moonee Valley on September 14 and with any luck he’ll have two other runs before the Cox Plate, one of those would be in the Toorak Handicap,” said McNamara.
Hornets’ Nest has won four of his seven race starts and has earned more than $65,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.
The High Chaparral gelding was purchased for just $2,500 in March last year and McNamara now believes him to be a Cox Plate hopeful.
